21 October 2016

Smoove has won a call for tenders organised by UNIDO, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (attached to the UN), to deploy a bicycle sharing system for the COP22, held between 7 and 18 November 2016 in Marrakech.

Established in partnership with local organisation “Estates Vision”, Medina Bike will be the “Vélib” of Marrakech, the first city in Africa to benefit from a public bike-sharing system. With a fleet of 300 bicycles and around a dozen stations, the system installed by Smoove will be available at iconic locations across the city like the Koutoubia and the Majorelle Gardens. The service will be launched during the COP22 and is established for the long-term, based on a renewable contract with an initial term of five years. Like Moscow, Helsinki and Vancouver, Medina Bike’s economic model will include the contribution of a sponsor, for which research is ongoing.

Medina Bike is a response to the desire of King Mohammed VI and the Moroccan government to launch concrete initiatives that focus on sustainable development, on the occasion of the COP 22. At the initiative of the Ministry of Environment, this project – coordinated by UNIDO and funded by the GEF (Global Environment Facility) – reiterates Morocco’s commitment to the fight against the negative effects of climate change.

This 22nd edition of the “Conference of Parties” will bring together 197 countries and should be all about taking action, according to organisers.

The look of the new bike and the official inauguration date of Medina Bikes will be revealed in the near future.

The countdown begins!
